Help for Java-Applet "Interaktive Regionalkarten Hessen"

Thematic maps now interactive

A picture says more than thousand words, and thematic maps more than a table. With the interactive maps contents "Interaktive Regionalkarten Hessen" (Java Applet) the national statistic office offers a new service in it’s Online range. Data can be investigated faster, regional comparisons between municipalities or counties thus become additionally and noticeably simplified.

The interactive maps are available for approx. 50 indicators of the various ranges of official statistics. These informations of living, environmental and economic conditions at the municipal, county, regional centre and state levels can be retrieved.

Apart of three exceptions all indicators in the regional maps are taken form the "Hessische Gemeindestatistik". The publication "Hessische Gemeindestatistik" comes out yearly (printversion: DIN A4, 200 pages, 16,00 Euro; online-version: Excel, free).

Thematic maps

Selected is the characteristic "population relative to municipal area" from the municipal level view. As municipality "Frankfurt am Main, St." is activated. With the min/max panels, navigation can be in municipal ranking order or one can jump from the highest to the lowest value.

Geographic map

With a click on the "Karte" button a switch from thematic map to geographic map and back is possible. If an area has been fixed with a left click this is maintained in the geographic map as well.

Special notice

It should be pointed out that the political and administrative areas used in this programme are particular to Germany and can not be directly compared to those of any other country. However as an approximation the following areas or districts and their sub divisions have been used here:

Mouse control

N.b. If Mouse control should not function, then please click on the applet to set the focus on the applet.

Left click
The area indicated with the mouse cursor will be fixed or released . By fixing the area it is possible to maintain the same area whilst changing the characteristic or topic.
Right click
Causes a switch to the lowest possible regional level with zoom. For example: You are operating in the county level display. The cursor is over the "Lahn-Dill-Kreis". With a right click the municipal areas of the "Lahn-Dill-Kreis" county are displayed. With a repeated right click the display returns to the county level (this is similarly true when you are in regional centre level display: a right click for example over the regional centre "Gießen" shows all municipalities within the regional centre "Gießen". With a repeated click the display returns to the regional centre level).

Technical requirements

The Virtual Maschine (VM) for Java must be installed in the browser. At least version 1.1.4 of Java is necessary.

The default VMs. with Java version 1.1 still present in some browsers (I.E.) are not able to process 2 Java- archives. Thus loading data from the 2nd. Archive is not possible and the applet will be terminated with an error message.

The only help here is to install a newer Java VM e.g. Version 1.5.x from SUN available at: www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

"Java" must be activated in the browser options / security. If the applet is not displayed the following 2 points should be checked.

Settings e.g. with IE and Microsoft-VM

Tools > internet options... > security > internet > Custom Level > Microsoft-VM > Java permissions > Select a High or Medium safety. "deactivate Java" prevents the execution of the applet.

Settings

An existing firewall should not block java applets (CAB archives, JAR archives, class-files and *.obj files (map))? Here mostly only a system administrator can help!

Loading time depends on the transmission rate (DSL: approx. 8 sec, ISDN: approx. 50 sec, 33,6 Modem: approx. 90 sec).

This applet is optimized for Windows and Internet Explorer 6.0 and 1024 x 768 Pixels.
